Abstract:
On 10 August 30 BC, 2054 years ago this month, Cleopatra, the Queen of Egypt and one of the most famous people in world history, committed suicide in Alexandria, according to legend by holding a poisonous snake to her breast. Her death marked the end of the Ptolemaic dynasty that had ruled Egypt for nearly 300 years. In her time the richest woman in the world, charming and undeniably intelligent but with a notable streak of cruelty, involved in pivotal events in world history, she is still a woman discussed and vigorously debated. This presentation will cover her life, her personality as far as we can know it, and her continuing impact on modern culture.
